Constructive Evaluation were commissioned by a local authority to carry out a materials assessment survey of a city centre multi-storey car park in Hampshire. The works were overseen by structural engineers from the local council, all information being relayed on site to the local authority who requested the works. Constructive Evaluation assisted the structural engineers during a condition survey of the structure in 2019. Information compiled during the condition survey led to the client and engineers producing a specification of testing works. Constructive Evaluation were awarded the contract further to the tendering process.
The works requested by the client involved;
- A condition survey of the external elevations which required an IRATA certified rope access team.
- The extraction of concrete core samples from internal structural elements to determine compressive strengths of the concrete samples. In addition to compressive strength testing, a number of samples were extracted for Petrographic analysis.
Extraction of concrete dust samples to determine carbonation depths and chloride ion content. Both of which are a common cause of corrosion to embedded reinforcement within structural elements.
- Electromagnetic scanning of RC elements to determine embedded reinforcement configuration.
- Pull testing undertaken to existing crash barrier fixings to determine the integrity of the fixings which have been in use for a number of years.
On completion of the site works, Constructive Evaluation received praise from the client and structural engineers on their efficiency, methodology of working and professionalism. The following comment was been made by the engineer involved;
“I pass on thanks to your company for the smooth investigation works undertaken this month. I have already endorsed this in person yesterday and was very impressed by your team.”
